Yesterday, I received tough news. Part of my childhood family passed away. Susan Bassett was a dear lady and my Mom's best friend for many years. Her daughter Susie was mine.
Until I turned 12, I spent a significant amount of time at her house, where I felt like part of the family. A good chunk of my childhood memories are centered around that place.I acknowledge that I might be idealizing the situation, but what I remember most is her joyful personality, her understanding, and the joy of enjoying homemade cookies in a warm and welcoming kitchen.
Auntie Sue was one of my last ties to that part of my life. I credit her with some important life lessons: have a sense of humor about yourself, give yourself grace, and perhaps the best lesson Auntie Sue taught me... laugh a lot... whenever you can.
I've not met any mother-daughter who laughed more, even on sad days. I will miss both Sue and Susie forever but today I will think of them giggling together in the great beyond. Maybe my Mom is there too.
Goodnight Aunty Sue.
